I always use salted butter and leave out the salt.&lt;br /&gt;

Traditionally, these are made in special molds which you can buy in specialty stores.  100g of sliced almonds (total, not per cookie) can be added to the backs of the cookies after they&amp;#039;ve been added to the molds for an especially festive note.  I generally skip this, as it tastes just as good without them and is a lot more work. &lt;br /&gt;

* 1 cup butter&lt;br /&gt;

* 1/2 cup &amp;quot;Gold Label&amp;quot; Molasses&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 cup blanched almonds slivers&lt;br /&gt;

Sift flour with ginger, soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Cream butter.  Gradually add sugar, creaming well. Blend in molasses.  Add dry ingredients gradually; mix well. Stir in almonds.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Divide dough in half. Shape into rolls, 8 inches long. Wrap in wax paper; chill several hours or overnight. Cut into 1/8 inch slices; place on ungreased cookie sheets.&lt;br /&gt;

Bake at 350F for 10 to 12 minutes.&lt;br /&gt;

Cut butter into flour, using lowest speed of mixer. Blend in remaining ingredients, except jam. Form into a ball. Roll out on floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with 2 inch round cutter. Place on ungreased cookie sheets.&lt;br /&gt;

Bake at 350F for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool 1 minute; remove from sheets. Cool completely. Spread jam between 2 cookies, sandwich-style. Dust with powdered sugar if desired. &lt;br /&gt;

The original recipe (by Julius Lilenthal) had both a chocolate frosting and jam sandwiched between the cookies (spread jam first, then frosting). Babbi never made it that way though. &lt;br /&gt;

Chocolate Frosting: Melt 6oz (1 cup) of semi sweet chocolate morsels with 1/4 cut cream over hot water. Stir in 2 tablespoons butter, 1 teaspoon rum flavor and 1/2 cup confectioners sugar. &lt;br /&gt;

Cream well:&lt;br /&gt;
* 1/4 cup butter&lt;br /&gt;
* 4 ounces cream cheese&lt;br /&gt;
* 2/3 cup sugar&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 egg&lt;br /&gt;
* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Add:&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 cup flour&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 teaspoon baking powder&lt;br /&gt;
* 1/4 teaspoon baking soda&lt;br /&gt;
* 1/4 cup milk&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Spread on a greased cookie sheet or 13x9x2&amp;quot; pan.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Mix:&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 can Solo poppy seed cake filling&lt;br /&gt;
* 2 Tablespoons milk (to make it spreadable)&lt;br /&gt;

Spread carefully on above dough.&lt;br /&gt;

Mix together:&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 cup flour&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 cup sugar&lt;br /&gt;
* 1/2 cup butter&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 teaspoon vanilla&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Crumble streusel on top of cake poppy seed layer.&lt;br /&gt;

Bake at 350° F for 30-45 minutes.&lt;br /&gt;
